My little kids love to paint so I am always looking for some type of craft or art project to do with them that involves painting. I am also big on trying to use craft supplies I already have instead of going out an purchasing more. Not only does it save me money but it free’s up room in my craft supply cabinets so that I can eventually get new, updated supplies!
If you have a big family like mine paper plates are a must! I know it is not green but this mama get’s tired and worn out by the evening. Many times I do not have the energy or time to wash dishes so that is where the paper plates are a lifesaver! Before you tear me to shreds I do not use them everyday only when I am exhausted or we have a busy night taking kids to all their sports games or other activities! Other items needed for this craft are listed below.
Materials:
Paper plates
Watercolor paint
Popsicle sticks
Pom poms
White glue
Foam flower stickers or other related floral stickers
Butterfly cut out
Exact-o knife
First make the slit in the paper plate approximately 3″ from the top of the plate into the center of the plate. The slit should be about 5 to 6 inches wide.
The butterfly can be printed on regular paper or on card stock and then cut out. I recommend using the card stock if you have it available because regular paper is not thick and the paint may get too saturated and cause holes in the paper. Have the kids paint the butterfly first so that it can dry while working on the rest of the craft.
Then have the kids paint the paper plate. We painted it to look like outside scenery (blue sky and green grass). Let me take that back, my 3 year old painted his whole plate blue, yep with flowers in the sky!
Break the Popsicle stick to the size of 2-3″. Decorate it with pom poms using white glue. Put it to the side and allow it to dry.
Once the paint on the paper plate is dry add the garden embellishments (flowers, etc)
Next once the butterfly is dry fold it in half and glue the Popsicle stick with the pom poms on it to the butterfly where you folded it. Finally, glue the back of the butterfly to the Popsicle stick.
Place the completed butterfly in the slit of the paper plate and move it side to side, up and down. Now you have a puppet!

That is so pretty! I used to do crafts like this all the time with the kids when they were little. It’s a fun way to encourage creativity and get in some nice bonding time.

We love to do crafts! When my daughter was younger, we would do all kinds of creative crafts. It kept her quite busy and helped her tons at college.
