Another fantastic Disney movie! I recently had the opportunity to watch McFarland USA which is based on a true story of underdogs triumphing over tremendous obstacles. This heartwarming drama follows novice runners who strive to build a cross-country team under Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) in their predominantly Latino high school. Everyone has a lot to learn about each other, but when Coach realizes the boys’ exceptional running ability, things change. Beyond their talent, it’s the power of family, commitment to each other and work ethic that transform them into champions — helping them achieve their own American dream.
Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) made bad choices in the beginning of the movie which effected not only his family but his coaching career. Those poor choices eventually led him to a run down area in McFarland, California. There his family settled in while Coach White struggled. He eventually came up with a plan to help a group of boys who had talent — running. For the first time the high school had a cross country team! Coach pushed never giving up on them which paid off – their team winning first place in the state!
This movie is so encouraging and inspirational. People come and go in our lives but we need to hold onto those relationships that are helpful to us and build us up. Definitely makes you stop and think about your life and the opportunity around!

We totally missed this in the theaters, so I am looking forward to a family movie night to watch this.
Yes I saw the movie, it is SO GOOD! My favorite scene was probably when the coach is at one of the houses and a players mom wants him to stay for dinner and she says “don’t you say to me ‘no.'” That actress was one of the best!
I had seen the trailer for this movie but, completely forgot about it – thank you for the review. This has gone on our family’s summer movie list.
