“I participated in a campaign on behalf of Influence Central for The Salvation Army. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.”
I cannot believe how fast Christmas is approaching, this year is flying. As we shop from store I see the Salvation Army Red Kettles which is a great way to help others in need. My children enjoy placing a monetary gift in the kettles as well. It gives me opportunity to teach them that there are others in need and we should give all year long.
Salvation Army has been around what seems like forever, do you know how they got started? The Salvation Army’s Captain McFee wanted to provide free Christmas dinner to the poor in San Francisco in December of 1891. He asked himself how he would pay for the food remembering his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England. On the Stage Landing, where the boats came in, he saw a large pot into which charitable donations were thrown by passersby. By Christmas 1895, the kettle was used in 30 Salvation Army locations in various sections of the West Coast area.
This wonderful cause has grown over the years, the Kettles now can be found online as well as many sites in foreign countries such as Korea, Japan, and Chile, European countries and Australia. Do not see a Red Kettle near you? You can donate online making donating even easier which has raised millions of dollars in donations over the past seven years! This year, The Salvation Army has made the Red Kettle donations a social experience by asking people to share their reasons for giving with #RedKettleReason giving people a chance during the hustle and bustle of this time of the year to think about how they give and share how their donations are making a difference.
The Salvation Army to do the most good possible for 30 million people each year. How can you help? Next time you see a Red Kettle Pot think about how your generosity would help someone in desperate need and make a difference!

I rarely have cash on me, but when I do and I pass a red kettle, I put a little something in there.
It is such a great cause! I think so many people become ‘used’ to seeing the red kettle – it’s important to remember what cause is behind the effort. I’m definitely going to take notice more this holiday season & donate!
what a great charity. can’t believe it can now be found on line. amazing.
I’ve always donated to the Salvation Army kettles whenever I walk past them during the holidays. Such a great concept!
I love the red kettle and I admire the volunteers that stand there in the cold for a long period of time gathering donations. It’s a good reminder this time of year to give to those less fortunate!
Those volunteers are amazing. When I was in NYC recently, all the volunteers were out there singing Christmas carols and dancing. All of them. It was awesome to see.
I don’t think I’ve seen any red kettles yet this year. I’ll be sure to keep my eye out for one.
One of these days I’m actually going to have cash on me so I can have my kids put stuff in. We always try to make a point to hit the kettles at least once. The whole “using debit card” has really hit into the number of times we can do it, because we never have cash. Now we have to put more effort into remembering. But I think it is such an important opportunity to help teach the kids the importance of helping others and that it doesn’t have to be hard to help.
I love this cause and every time I see one of those red kettles me and the kids donate what we can. Great post!
I’ll definitely throw my spare change in the next kettle I see. Thank you for letting us know about this awesome campaign!
Whenever I get change from a purchase I always donate it! It’s so important to give back especially during the holiday’s <3
I always put something in the red kettle. I carry coins/cash with me during the holidays just so the kids and I can put some in. Even a little goes a long way!
salvation army efforts are really great!
This was an interesting read. I actually didn’t know the history, and that is ran so deep. I’ll definitely be thinking of this the next time I see one!
I try to always stop and put something in. Especially when I’m with my children to teach them the spirit of giving.
I always make sure to have extra change to give to the red kettles!! My daughter loves putting the change in so I’m glad its turned into a “holiday tradition”
They do amazing work, I feel wherever i can help i do and if i have some change in my pocket i will give.
The Salvation Army is a wonderful cause. I have been seeing a lot of them out and about now. Soon they will be putting on their Santa Suits.
I love hearing these inspirational stories of how organizations come together to give back. I will be sure to include my donation the next time I come across the Salvation Army Red Kettle.
I think it is great that they have gone social with it. I think that this will help draw more people to take part in giving.
I just saw on our local news last night that someone dropped a $1200 coin into a kettle. I wish I could do that!
I like what you said about teaching children to help and most importantly, to help year long. It’s something that not everyone does. Bless your heart for the gesture that you did, the world needs more people like you.
Salvation army is great. Thanks for sharing!
I see people out with the red kettles all over the place in our area around the holidays. It’s a great cause.
Such a good course seen alot on the street trying to help with this.x
I had no idea they have been around that long. I try to remember to always drop a donation in the kettle when I see it.
We always give to the Salvation army at Christmas. My kids love to run up and put it in the kettle.
The Salvation Army is a great charity to donate to. I always donate when i pass a red kettle.
Me too, Ann!
We save all our change all year, just to have a bunch to put in a kettle every time we pass one.
One of the local Boy Scout Troops was manning the Red Kettle at the Grocery Store this weekend. I had a bunch of change that apparently accumulated while I was sick and not going anywhere (the only explanation I have for that is anytime I did go anywhere I must not have given exact change because any extra use of brain power on my part was to much). The Salvation Army benefited so I guess that makes it a positive thing that I had all of that change in my purse. However I think they are looking for bills not change because the slot is not made for dumping your change in the kettle.
Any or the Kettles I have donated in have never had slots they are opened.
All of our kettles have slots, but they actually make it harder for bills!
Our kettles have slots, too. I used to say, “we already gave” when we passed one, but in the past few years it’s become our family tradition to put SOMETHING in the kettle each time we see it. Even if it’s just a quarter, it teaches my kids to have that joy of giving.
I have grown up my whole life seeing the red kettle. I love that there programs and campaigns out there to help those in need.
