TEN BLACK DOTS (TEACHING MY 3 YEAR OLD HIS NUMBERS) stART

Every Thursday A Mommy’s Adventures does a really fun blog carnival every Thursday – read your child a story then accompany it with art!
I have been teaching my 3 year old his numbers 0-9 for the past few weeks. Counting them, number recognition and matching the correct of manipulatives to each number. I got this great book at the library that I recommend if you are teaching your kids their numbers.
What can you do with ten black dots?

“One dot can make a sun or a moon when day is done. Two dots can make the eyes of a fox…”. Count all the way to ten with Donald Crews and delight in the simple rhymes, everyday objects, and stunning graphics of a master of the picture concept book.
I printed off all the sheets 0-9 HERE. (We did numbers 0-9 ONLY because for the math curriculum I use for my kindergartner they recommend teaching 0-9 first) Then I had Jumping Bean inside each number match up using different materials in the inside of each number. So for each number I gave him the ink dobblers, a sun smiley stamper, dot stickers and paper punch outs (trying to keep with the “dot” theme of the book even though they are not all black dots like the book). Accoriding to the number he added an item to the inside of the number matching it to the correct amount.
Then turned it into a number flip book – we will go over it each morning till it clicks! Regular books are great but he enjoys looking at his own work!
hole punched the top & inserted a binder ring.

  1. Very cool. I tried doing that with my kids and it just didn’t click for them. But counting on the calendar clicked for them. It’s funny how different things work for different kids.
