Dipnetting / Nature Preserve Tour

Today we had a really great tour with one of our homeschool groups of a nature preserve. It was JJ’s 1st time dipnetting! They went in swampy water with nets & pulled out some really neat critters!

JJ caught a 2 water diving bettles
& at least 4 crawfish!
Here is one of the crawfish he caught!
Here are a few critters the kids caught – crawfish, fish, tadpoles, water bugs, etc.
Mrs. Ginger the tour leader caught this Fisher Spider! He had BIG fangs!
Some of the animals we also saw – this alligator was literally too close, Mrs. Ginger said it looked like people had been feeding it because they normally do not get this close & unfortunately they would hae to have it put down – it’s sad how mankind just can leave well enough alone!
A raccoon up in the tree, laying in a large birds nest!
What a nice day, JJ enjoyed the dipnetting. God is amazing, the beautiful creatures He creates!

  1. What a fun time! We caught some crawfish this weekend too! 🙂

  2. That is an awesome nature preserve, did you get to take them home, or is that in a lab there?

  3. no lab, didn’t get to take them home. The kids got to look at the critters up close in magnifying jars, then the preserve released them back in the water. Since it’s a nature preserve they want to maintain it.

  4. Following you from Friendly Friday!

  6. That looks like a lot of fun! I have two boys so I’m trying to prepare myself for dealing with a lot of “critters” in the coming years. 🙂

  9. Looks like you had a great time! Got me wondering if there is anywhere around here. Not sure I would want to come close to the spider. Love the picture of the raccoon too. Reminded me I saw some cool animals on my way to and from my ex’s the other day: a bear, deer (that is normal though), a raccoon, some turkey and some foxes. And did I have my camera, of course not!

  10. This is so much fun!
Great blog! Great ideas for my little ones 🙂

  11. How Fun!

  12. Wow, this is an awesome trip to go on! However that spider would creep me out- especially with big fangs! haha!

  13. You are a better mom than me! I would not have signed up for that field trip, lol. Cute blog!

  14. I used to catch “crawdads” when I was little, which was all fun until I forgot one in a metal Strawberry Shortcake tin & the afternoon sun cooked it pink like boiled lobster. Ick.

  15. Sounds like a wonderful day! I just found your blog through wuhs, and it’s wonderful! You have a beautiful family.
