Hail Storm

I love homeschooling because everything can be turned into a lesson & is a opportunity to teach! Today we were supposed to go to our nutritional co-op with our homeschool group but all 3 kids have little colds so we have been homebound. Plus I was glad I didn’t go out in the nasty weather we had. It was my 2 boys 1st time seeing HAIL! I heard it hitting our livingroom glass sliding door so I ran for my camera & told my boys to look at the ice falling from the sky! They were mesmorized! It was so bad outside that our bench swing flipped over & fell on the kids outdoor playhouse. The power went out for about an hour, which gave me a opportunity to teach JJ about electricity briefly. At 1st I dreaded all this but I am glad we stayed home because it was an opportunity we wouldn’t have gotten!
ice on my kids trampoline!
This is a big deal where we live because this is a rarity!
So…………. I decided to have fun with this!
I did a ice cube sensory bowl, I hid bottle caps in the bowl for the boys to dig out

Even the baby LOVED the ice!

Then our Science experiment…………
I put 3 ice cubes in a bowl, asked my preschooler why the ice cubes during the hail storm melted so quickly & surprisingly he said because of the warmth! So to duplicate what we saw I gave him some warm water to pour over the ice cubes & we timed how long it took for the ice cubes to melt – it took 10 minutes!

  1. What a great idea with the ice. And clever for using the weather issues as a teaching tool!
