Paper Towel 4th of July Tie Dye Decorations (Kids Craft)

Typically by now my kids would have made several 4th of July crafts during this time of year but our schedules have been super hectic.  All 6 of my kids have participated in camps and I have felt like a chauffeur carting them back and forth.  Not to mention trying to finish our homeschool curriculum and preparing for the new school year to start next month. It has left little time to sit and do crafts. So we are getting down to crunch time and while my two older boys are at wrestling class my little ones and I sat down and decided to do a fun easy craft.  It is not just any craft but one we decided to use as 4th of July decorations.

Fourth of July is just around the corner so if you are looking to do a fun easy craft with your kids this one is for you.  Most of us already have the supplies to make these but if not they are easy to purchase.

Materials:

White colored, thick 2-ply paper towels (a good brand)

Sharpie markers

Rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl)

Dropper, spray bottle or syringe

There are a few different ways to do this craft.  You can either use the paper towel in the shape it comes in or you can cut it out into shapes. Before you get started make sure you put down newspaper on whatever area you are working at because it can get a bit messy.  We decided to do the original paper towel shape and stars shapes.  Next using the Sharpie markers make firework type designs or just color the paper towel in red and blue on your paper towel. Then use either a spray bottle, syringe or dropper filled with rubbing alcohol and spray it on your Sharpie design. The colors will run making it look like a tie dye design. Allow your creation to fully dry and then hang up as a decoration. We used double sided tape and hung ours in the front window of our house so that passerby’s can see.

Tip: You can do this craft using washable markers as well which would give it more of a tie dye effect while the Sharpie markers do give a tie dye effect but you can still see the original design drawn.

  10. We did a similar project like this with T-shirt’s at the library one summer. We used highlighters as well. It’s a little less messy than actual tie dye, but it’s still fun
