I love taking my kids to the movies but these days it can be slim pickings to what is child friendly.  Recently I read about a movie that is definitely on my bucket list for my whole family to see. Opening April 13 on approximately 3,000 screens across the U.S. and Canada and coinciding with the year-long 100th commemoration of the United States’ role in the “War to End All Wars, SGT. STUBBY: AN AMERICAN HERO is an upcoming computer-animated feature film based on the incredible true story of America’s most decorated dog.  After being rescued off the streets by a young Soldier on the eve of America’s entry in World War I, Stubby is given a home, a family, and the chance to embark on the adventure that would define a century.

The 102nd Infantry Regiment – part of the 26th “Yankee” Division – was drilling on the grounds of Yale University. Private First Class J. Robert Conroy noticed a small brindle mutt wandering around the field, watching the Soldiers and searching for scraps of food. Conroy and his fellow doughboys developed a fondness for the dog, giving him a name that matched his unassuming personality and short, constantly-wagging tail: Stubby.

To celebrate the movie and adding it to our movie bucket list my daughter decided to make a paper origami dog which resembles Sgt. Stubby. Here is how to make it:

Materials:

Paper (she used regular white copy paper)

Crayons

Scissors

First take the paper and bring one corner to the other corner so you have a triangle and about 2 inches left on the side. Next cut off the extra paper that is not in the triangle. Then fold one corner of the triangle down making it into an ear, do the same on the other side. Now you have a dog face. Color and decorate the dog into your own one of a kind origami dog. (She used the piece of paper she cut off to make a mini dog following the same directions above) Decorate it like Sgt. Stubby like my daughter did!

Have you heard about Sgt. Stubby? Be sure to keep your eyes opened because it will be out before you know it (April 13th).  Read more about Sgt. Stubby and his real life events World War I.   Also add Stubby the Dog Soldier: World War I Hero book to your child’s book collection – what a great book!

Enter to win a chance to win a fun Sgt. Stubby prize pack (Stubby plush $20 value, Stubby drawstring bag $12, hardcover book Stubby the Dog Soldier: World War I Hero for ages 5-7 $14.95) by entering on the below entry form to enter for a chance to win.
