Superman Pine Box Derby (Learn & Link With Linky)

My kids attend Awanas at our church. For 3rd grade and up kids can sign up for the pine box derby races. Children are given a block of wood to make their own pine box derby cars. My husband and son worked together, it was great bonding time. It was a great time for my son to continue to learn about tools.  The theme that he chose this year is Superman. Last year he did Batmobile and won 1st place.

My son told my husband what shape he wanted his car to be so together they cut it out and then sanded it.  Next he painted it blue with acrylic paint. I had found a few Superman logo’s on Pinterest as well as a Superman Lego character.  Then the wheels were added and my son glued on the Superman glued all the accessories to the car. My husband added the weights on top of the car so that it would meet the requirements of 5 oz.   Once the glue dried he Modge Podged so that the Superman accessories would not fall off and it also gave the car a nice shimmer.

If you are not part of Awanas I encourage you to have your children join. Has your child ever made a pine box derby car?

  1. Robin (Masshole Mommy) says:

That car came out awesome. We call it the Pinewood Derby around here 🙂

  2. This looks like so much fun! My son is not even two yet but loves banging around with his plastic tools. I can’t wait until he is old enough to do things like this with his daddy!

  3. Wow! Such a great job and what a great way for father and son to bond. Love it!

  4. My kids have always loved the Pinewood Derby! This is my 2nd son’s last year though sadly. My oldest doesn’t get to do it this year cause he’s too old and he’s seriously bummed out about it.

  23. That Superman car is awesome. At our church, it was Royal Rangers who had the Pinewood Derby. And the girls from Missionettes were invited as guest racers. The first year my Dad made me a Cinderella Pumpkin Coach which I painted and the next year I did most of the work on a Barbie Van myself. We had a lot of fun.

  24. Christine says:

I remember my son’s first pinewood derby car! We used to have a girl’s division too for the little sisters.

  25. SO neat! We have this at our church, too, for our Royal Rangers! Thanks so much for taking the time to link up at the #HomeMattersParty – we hope to see you again next week! Feel free to bring a friend 🙂

  26. My son loves anything that is “Superhero” related. What a really cute idea!

  27. That”s awesome! Thanks for sharing at Home Sweet Home!
