Even though our family homeschool’s I am a firm believer in testing. Every week my fourth and second grader are tested for math and spelling. Since my children are not used to testing because this was something we recently started I have to prepare them for things like the SAT’s. So how can I prepare my children for test taking when they have not really been subjected to it? Carson-Dellosa has a great selection of Spectrum Test Practice and Test Prep books which are a grade-specific workbook series designed to help students prepare for standardized tests as well as helping them learn how to become a successful test taker.
Spectrum Test Practice and Test Prep workbooks are based on the Common Core State Standards for English language arts as well as mathematics. As a parent it is easy for me to check my son’s work because the answers are in the back of the workbook and once I check his work we sit down and go over any incorrect answers he may have chosen. This gives us a chance to make sure that my child is understanding the material.
My fourth grader is greatly benefiting from these books. He is not a really good test taker, so the more that he practices in the Spectrum Test Prep I am noticing an improvement in his test taking skills which is promoting efficiency and success. He is now stopping and taking his time as well reading the questions which is building his confidence. He is learning how to follow directions, while understanding different test formats, using effective strategies which avoids common mistakes, and allowing him budgeting his time wisely.
Free sample pages can be downloaded for FREE for language art. Spectrum Test Practice and Test Prep books are available in several subjects for grades Kindergarten and up in print or by e book.
Definitely something I need to keep in my back pocket. I have a Kindergartner this year, so I have no idea if she is a good test taker or not. These would be great practice for her though!
I think this is a great test taking resource. Very helpful.
What a great looking book – tests are so different from anything else, so a nice way to show them the format. x
These look like very helpful books. Our kids take standardized tests in 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade and I’ll have to remember these!
I love workbooks with answers in the back! This looks very helpful for kids and perfect for long breaks.
This sounds very useful. You have to test their knowledge to gauge what you need to work on.
I wish I would have known about this when my Granddaughter was in school. I do need to send this post to my Hubs niece. She has a son that is horrible at tests, but very smart.
This seems like a great Test taking material. Though I don’t support test taking myself .. I understand what you mean when you said they have to be prepared at this stage for bigger Tests like SAT
Yes agree! It’s important for a child to know how to take a test. These books are great.
I use Spectrum books with my son. We homeschool. I love them!
I’m keeping an eye out for things like this – my son starts kindergarten in the fall!
Test taking definitely takes some getting used to. The skills kids gain with this will carry over into higher education.
These might be good for our summer learning, I like to keep the kids enganged even if its just a few pages of busy work a day.
This looks like a great resource. The earlier kids can get used to test taking, the better.
R this is a great book to practice. Even though we are not doing homeschool this will help us
It’s important that kids know what to expect on tests like the SAT. These look like great testing booklets.
I always hated standardized testing. I feel bad for the kids nowadays who have to take them
Tests were never my strong point. Looks like a great way to prepare!
This is wonderful! Thank you what a great resource! Kids can get so Overwhelmed with tests anymore!
Testing was never my strong point. I got severe anxiety. When I went back to college later in life, the test anxiety didn’t change but learned how to work with it and get a masters degree.
I personally hate standardized tests as an educator. Since they are a necessary evil, these programs to help prepare kids to take them are essential.
I hated taking tests like the SATs. I never cared too much on what I scored on them since they info I memorized were useless 😛
This would be great for my son! He needs some help in that area
Testing can be so hard and stressful. Preparing them in any way is always a good idea.
Spectrum sounds like a wonderful program! I will have to look into getting it for my daughter!
What an excellent way to help prepare your children! I’ll have to spread the word about this!
It is great to have these type of resources available both for kids that are home-schooled and those attending public or private school systems. This seems like it would really prepare your child.
This is a great resource for parents and students. I suffered from testing anxiety as a student and I think test prep starting at a young age would help combat that.
I didn’t realize there were no tests with homeschooling. This is a good way to prepare them for the ones they will eventually come across. Smart thinking on your part. 🙂
I think this is a great way to prepare them- we love Spectrum products!
Looks like a really good product parents should be aware of.
This does look like a good test prep material.
Testing…testing. I commented earlier but it disappeared.
I love Spectrum books…my kid didn’t, but her stellar grades convinced her they are good tools! For any home schooling Mom I know I definitely will recommend them. 🙂
I have never heard of Spectrum books they look like awesome tools to help children when it comes to standardized tests.
I think if it helps them to feel less stressed and anxious taking the test then that’s a great thing! My kids could benefit from these for sure. I agree though also with the comment above I am not a fan of standardized testing.
This looks like a great way to help kids prepare for tests. I wish these were available when my kids were in school.
Test taking is definitely a learned skill! I think it’s great that you’re starting on testing now so that they are better prepared for big tests like the SAT later.
It is always nice to know there are so many ways like this to have kids prepare for it.
I think preparing for test is so important. Not being able to take test – makes a huge difference in grades.
That is awesome to see positive change with these test books. School has changed SO much since I was young!
In NY, the state tests are coming soon. Seems like it would be a great way to get your child ready and be familiar with test taking strategies.
This is great to know even for kids in schools with standardized testing, since they can help prepare or practice at home and feel comfortable!
