My parents got divorced when I was 10 years old and both remarried shortly thereafter. My father remarried a woman who gave him an ultimatum to pick either his future (which was is her) or his past (which was me). He made the decision to choose his future. For almost 31 years he has not been part of my life. I could never understand how someone could just walk out of their child’s life. Thankfully my mom remarried to a man that raised me and has loved me as father would and should. He always met my needs as a child and has always been there for me even till this day.
He has loved me as if I were his birth child, a love that my birth father till this day has never given me. My stepfather has been the only grandfather my children have ever known. He has been there when all 5 of them were born and one of the 1st to get to hold our blessings. I am so thankful and so blessed to call him my dad. He will never know how much I appreciate him and how instrumental he has been in my life.
So Father’s Day is not just a special day for me because my husband is the father to our 5 kids but it’s a day that I celebrate my stepfather for being such an amazing dad to me and grandfather to my kids.

Growing up without my own biological father was tough for me too. but with having a mother that basically performed both roles, I feel somewhat the same way you do about your bio dad not giving you the love and support you needed growing up.

My father was also in and out of my life. My parents finally divorced 20 years later in 2004. Even now, Willie is still a constant thorn but if it wasn’t for him, I would not be born.

Beautiful post. My husband has been raising my daughters since they were babies and to him they are his kids no matter what. It is a great thing Step fathers do. I too never understood how a parent could chose another life than one with their child. My mother did that to me so I know how it feels.
