My kids have really taken an interest in cooking. I find them in the kitchen asking if they can help me cook. I think it’s a great life skill and a wonderful time for them to learn so I get them involved. My older son and I made pumpkin bread!
What a really simple recipe to make with children! I love when my kids help me cook or bake and then when they taste the end result and see their joy on their faces is priceless. It is such a sense of accomplishment and rewarding for them.
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 cup canned pumpkin (we used fresh pureed pumpkin)
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cups of shortening (or substitute)
- In a large bowl combine 1 cup of flour, the brown sugar, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, and nutmeg. Add pumpkin, milk, eggs and shortening.. Beat with an electric mixer on low until blended then blend for 2 minutes. Next add the remaining flour blend well. Pour batter into a greased pan (9 X 5 X 3 inch loaf pan). Bake on 350 for 60 to 65 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack.
I have made chocolate chip banana bread with my son before, next is zucchini bread. Do you bake with your children? If so what is your favorite recipe to make with them?
