Christmas – Birth of Christ Bible lesson, crafts, etc.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

It’s the day 2 days after Thanksgiving and I am already starting to put some lessons plans together for my preschooler and toddler for Christmas. My main focus for December is to continue to teach my children about the birth of Christ. How we already received our present, Jesus. Toys break and get old but Jesus never breaks or gets old!

Whew! We decorated our Christmas tree taking a break from
homeschooling
today (11/30/09)

I buy my kids a special ornament each year to commerate each Christmas. We also pick up ornaments when we go on vacationsm it’s nice to see ornaments dating back from when my husband & I were dating! Here are a few special ornaments that are dear to my heart!
Stroll down memory lane……..
These are just a few baby’s 1st Christmas ornaments that are my boys (baby for my oldest & a baby rattle for my youngest) This year I am sure we will be adding pink to our tree since this is our baby girl’s Christmas!
We start our Advent book tomorrow (12/1/09). We did this book last year and my preschooler really enjoyed it & got alot out of it.
This book is awesome. Each page (day) has a Bible story, a craft or activity accompanied by a prayer.
Day 1 – Gabriel visits Mary (Luke 1:26-32) Activity draw or cut a angel for your Christmas tree.

Day 2 – My Shepherd (Matthew 2:6) Activity – How does a shepherd look after his sheep – make a sheep ornament.
This is the activity we are making: http://www.danekeclublambs.com/woolysheep.pdf (I copied & pasted this into Word & made the image smaller) OR here are some other ideas: http://www.danekeclublambs.com/SheepCrafts.html ) I cut the template out & traced it on the back of a cardboard cereal box then the boys colored the sheep’s nose black & they glued cotton balls on the sheep.)
Here is a picture of our ornaments from day 1 & 2. (angels & sheep)

Day 3 – Moon beams (Psalm 148:3 & 5) Activity – Go outside tonight & enjoy the night sky.
Day 4 – Big sky, little me (Psalm 8:3-4) Activity – Today make an star ornament.
I will take my star cookie cutter, trace it on the back of a cereal box, cut it, have the boys glue streamers to the bottom of the star & then glue glitter onto their starts.
Day 5 – No Room (Luke 2:1-7) Activity – Can you think of a time when somebody turned out to be different than you expected?
Day 6 – Bird Lover (Luke 12:24) Activity – Set out a special Christmas feast for the birds.
Day 7 – Heavenly Rest (Psalm 127:2) Activity – The Bible tells us God never sleeps! Tonight, when you go to bed, thank Him for protecting you while you sleep.
Day 8 – Good Gifts – (Matthew 7:10-11) Can you think of anyone who needs your generousity this Christmas season? What can you & your family do to help? My son learned today how to give to others that have nothing, he did something very special for those that have nothing (I am not going to post it because it’s between him & the Lord)
Day 9-  Jesus Loves Children – (Matthew 19:14) Activity – Look at your baby pictures Do your mom & dad have pictures of themselves when they were little? To the left is my preschooler looking at his baby pictures.

Day 10 – Make Way! (Isaiah 40:3-5) Activity – As you prepare for Christmas, can you think of anything in your life that might be rough or rugged that you need God to smooth out?

Day 11 – Good Faith – (Isaiah 11:1-5) Activity – Make an ornament shapped like fruit. How can others “taste” the good fruit we bear?

Day 12 – The Shepherd’s surprise (Luke 2:8) Activity – Make a list of all the good things that God has already given you.

Day 13– God’s Lamp (Psalm 119:105) Activity – Shine a flash light in front of you as you walk. See how it lights your way!

Day 14 – Stand Up & Shine – (Isaiah 60:1, John 8:12) Activity = Together light a Christmas candle in a darkened room. See the difference! Use your candle at dinner to remind you of the light of Jesus.
Day 15– Living Well  (John 4:13-14) Activity – Place a glass underneath the faucet & turn the water on full force. Watch it overflow. Can you think of a time when your heart was overflowing?

Day 16– Real Bread (John 6:35) Activity – Make or buy some Christmas bread & give it to someone whose tummy might need filling.

Day 17– Wise Men, Wise Gifts ( Matthew 2:1-2) Activity – What is the best gift you can give Jesus?

Day 18 – Smarty Pots (Isaiah 29:16) Activity – Make a pot shaped Christmas ornament. Who is smarter, you or the pot?

Day 19– Better than gold (Psalm 19:9-10) Activity – Why is it better to be rich in who we are than to be rich in what we have?

Day 20– Real treasurers (Matthew 6:19-20) Activity – Show your family your special treasures. Can you think of some heavenly ones?

Day 21– The world’s best gift (2 Corinthians 9:15) Activity – There is not enough money in the world that can replace a priceless gift. What makes Jesus our priceless gift from God?

Day 22 – Heaven’s door (Revelation 3:20) Activity – Why did God send Jesus to be our Savior?

So far I found a cute way aside from our Advent calendar (for free – look under my homeschool freebies) to count down the days till Christmas. This is a good way for your child to recognize their numbers 1-25. I printed out the Christmas tree page & I will have my preschooler use some colored circle stickers to put on each day as they come. Here is the page: www.earlylearningactivities.com/PDF/ctcm.pdf

Here is our Christmas tree count down, my toddler’s in on the left, my preschooler’s on the right – he decided he was going to do a dot to dot, connecting the numbers 1-25 in order by number then he wrote Christmas tree on his paper. Everyday I will give them a circle sticker to put on the actual number/day it is.
I will be doing the following lesson for the month of December. It goes from the birth of John the Baptist to the birth of Christ. It sets the one scene for the our Savior’s birth. What I like about it is each lesson is printable, it goes over the story and then has questions for you to ask your child.

  1. Hi, stopping by for the friday blog hop-in january. So glad you are teaching your kids about Jesus birthday! We used to get our kids each a new ornament, too. Now that they’re adults, they enjoy their own box of childhood Christmas memories. Book suggestion: The Night before Jesus, by Herbert Brokering, 1977, Concordia publishing house, St. Louis. Our kids remember this fondly.
