As a mom I often wonder especially this time of the year what was it like to be Mary, the mother of Jesus. What was it like to be His mom?
Starting from when Mary was told by the Angel of The Lord (Gabriel) that she was going to give birth to Jesus! (You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. Luke 1:31) I may have intinally thought what???!!! Her reaction, ” I am the Lord’s servant.” I would have been in awe and honored to be chosen by God!
Then as Joseph and Mary traveled to Jerusalem to register. In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. (Luke 2:1-3) Mary sat on a donkey during this travel. I am 5 months pregnant I couldn’t imagine for traveling for days on a donkey! I’m sure my back would hurt and I would be tired but Mary never complained! This baffles me because she was at the very end of her pregnancy! I have traveled by car at 8 months pregnant and I was uncomfortable!

What was it like to be pregnant with Jesus? To feel His kicks and movements during the pregnancy would have left me speechless. At 5 months pregnant now I am speechless when my baby girl moves or hiccups but to feel to feel the actual movements of Jesus, wow! Did He kick hard, did He hiccup a lot? Was He a big baby or small baby? Was He born with a lot of hair or little hair? What did His 1st cry sound like?
Then after that long travel there was nowhere to stay! No nice warm comfy bed with a pregnancy pillow but a manager with smelly animals! She gave birth to The King in a dark, smelly manager! Again, she doesn’t complain! And then once He’s born He’s placed in an animal trough! We have it made to be able to give birth from the comfort of our own homes or the hospital, luxury really. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7
Then once Jesus was born to hold Him in her arms, to nurse Him must have been indescribable! When I have given birth to my babies and heard their 1st cries and have held them and nursed them I have cried with joy. What did Mary do? Did she cry of happiness? The Bible says But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19
She watched Him grow from a baby to a toddler, young child, teenager, young man to a man. When did He learn to walk? What was His 1st word? What toys did He play with as a child? What was His favorite food? These are all questions we can answer for our own children, I just wonder about our Savior. He was not a typical child, He was more, a gift, created to save those who believe.
Being a parent is one of the greatest joys I have been blessed with. I am very thankful and honored that God allows me to be a mom. Sometimes I just wonder the challenges that Mary had to overcome as the mother of Jesus from His birth to seeing His death. Each day God gives me with my children is a treasure, I am sure Mary felt the same way. Thankful God made me who I am, a mother to 4 soon to 5, a wife, a daugther, a friend, etc. Mary was a very special mom because she was the mother of the most Precious Gift to us all! I think she knew how special He was a cherished it each day just like most parents do!
