Description
One woman. One seed.
One hope for the future.
Thayu nyumba — Peace, my people.

Wangari grew up in the shadow of Mount Kenya listening to the stories about the people and land around her. Though the trees towered over her, she had loved them for as long as she could remember. So strong, so beautiful, how the trees made her smile.

Wangari planted trees one by one to refresh her spirit. When the women came to her for help with their families, she told them to do the same. Soon the countryside was filled with trees. Kenya was strong once more. Wangari had changed her country, tree by tree.

Donna Jo Napoli tells a story inspired by the life of 2004 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Wangari Maathai that will touch the hearts and spirits of all who read it. Kadir Nelson’s stunning collage illustrations honor the spirit of a land and of the woman who saved it
My 4 year old son and I really enjoyed reading Mama Miti. I thought the story of this book how angry men and enemies becoming friends is a great lesson for children. This showed my son how people can become united no matter our differences. I love how it was all pulled together by nature, variety of trees and caring for this planet and the people on this planet. My son especially enjoyed the bright and vivid colors Kadir Nelson used. The illustrations were done in a fabric/tectile artwork pattern. Kadir Nelson was inspired by his African culture.

I firmly believe every child should be read this book, it’s such a wonderful way to teach our children how to love each other and our planet no matter what. Mama Miti is also a wonderful way to teach your child about Africa. I definitely plan on incorporating this book into our geography lessons when we do our studies on Africa.

In honor of this publication Simon and Schuster has made a donation to the Green Belt Movement to plant trees in Kenya. For information on the Greenbelt Movement visit Green Belt Movement.
