8 Ways To Curb Your Sweet Tooth On Paleo And Whole30

A little over a year ago my lifestyle changed. I decided to do something about my health.  When I was young I was always small.  Once I had 6 children my body transformed into something I do not like.  Not only have I not been happy with my overall physical appearance but on top of it I am tired and have aches and pains.  I am sure I am tired because I am trying to keep up with 6 children all day and I am no spring chicken so maybe that is why I have aches and pains.  Then there is my father who passed away at a young age of diabetes and heart disease.  I do not want that to happen to me so  I decided to get myself under control.  Thankfully I started a new lifestyle, Paleo. What is Paleo? Basically, it’s eating very low carbs, clean eating, no processed foods, no sugars or no dyes just healthy meats, fruits, and veggies.  With that being said what on earth do I do about my sweet tooth?  Sugar is addicting!

Here are things I am doing to curb my sweet tooth, trust me they work!

Exercise.  Yep, when I want something sweet I jump on my treadmill.  Not only am I occupied with exercising and forget about wanting to gobble up something sweet but I am helping my body get in shape.  Typically after exercising, I forget all about sweets or food!

Drink water.  If you are like me and dislike drinking plain water just add a few fresh berries or lemon juice to your ice water.  Even better grab flavored natural seltzer water! The more water the better!

Chew gum.  Look for gum without all the gross dyes.

Brush your teeth.  The taste of the sweet toothpaste does the trick even though you are not digesting it. Opt of fluoride-free, natural toothpaste brands.  Curb that sweet tooth all while keeping your teeth healthy as well!

Grab fruit but stick with low carb fruits:

Raspberries – Half a cup has 3 grams of carbs.

Blackberries – Half a cup has 4 grams of carbs.

Strawberries – Eight medium-sized has 6 grams of carbs.

Plum – One medium-sized has 7 grams of carbs.

Clementine – One medium-sized has 8 grams of carbs.

Kiwi – One medium-sized has 8 grams of carbs.

Cherries – Half a cup (approximately 12 cherries) has 8 grams of carbs.

Blueberries – Half a cup has 9 grams of carbs.

Cantaloupe (melon) – One cup has 11 grams of carbs.

Peach – One medium-sized has 13 grams of carbs.

Do your best to stay away from artificial sweeteners.  Studies have been done about the effects of artificial sweeteners and most of them have had a positive effect on obesity.  In my home, we sparingly use organic raw honey in baked goods and other Paleo recipes.

Do not sample goodies.  Not even just one taste.  Many times one taste leads to several tastes. When stores are sampling goodies or people around you are eating foods that are not Paleo just walk away. Use self-control. In the long run, it is worth it. You will have your health to thank you for it.

When all else fails make a Paleo compliant treat.  Pinterest (or stay tuned here because I have many recipes to share with you) has loads of delicious recipes that are so simple to make.  If you are not a fan of baking like myself get some help. My 9-year-old daughter does all our Paleo baking in our home!

If you do feel like you want to cheat ask yourself is it worth it? If it is than limit yourself without going overboard! The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars to about 6 teaspoons per day for women and 9 for men.  Remember that when reading food labels. I am astonished at how much sugar is in processed foods!

  1. I control mine by never EVER even taking one bit of anything with sugar. As soon as I get any sugar in my body, I am off the wagon completely. I just start to pig out on anything with sugar.

  2. Gum is what I also use to keep me from snacking. I’ll end up chewing it for hours just to get by!

This is so helpful. I do drink water but sometimes still have the cravings, will try the other tips

  4. I’ve done three Whole30s and it was hard but doable. I started really craving veggies and things like bananas! Fruit water helped too.

  5. I love bananas also but unfortunately they have lots of sugar in them.

  8. I will need to use a sweet toothpaste from now on and try these other tips. It’s so hard for me say NO to any sweets.

  9. Thank you for sharing about your journey. I am in the same boat. I need to make a change for my health. You are very inspiring as I have 6 kids too! Just didn’t birth all of them. LOL

  10. I love the options, Nicole!
Especially when it comes to berries. Feed me berries any time!

  11. I Agree! Taking care of a body is crucial! A healthy Diet is the first way toward it, did you think to join GYM or thought of doing some indoor exercises?
