Last June I have had enough. I felt crummy and I was tired all the time. I needed to do something so I did a bit of research and I decided a change my lifestyle. My eating habits had to change. A long story short (I will write a separate post on the long story soon) I decided to go on Paleo. The Paleo diet (I call it Paleo lifestyle) is basically low carb, gluten free, no processed foods which includes sugar, breads, etc. The diet consists of eating fresh fruits, vegetables and meat.
I have stumbled along the way, at times getting discouraged because unfortunately I am looking to loose all the weight I need to loose instantly which is not realistic. I am back on Paleo stricter than ever. Now setting a realistic goal for myself by the end of the summer. Just because I have cut out all the bad foods does not mean I need to completely do without. There are ways to make completely healthy recipes using compliant ingredients.
My husband made ribs for us on Memorial Day weekend. I knew we could not have store bought BBQ sauce because they are filled with sugar. I did not want a rub on the ribs either so I scoured Pinterest looking for a compliant BBQ sauce. I found a recipe that looked good but it had ingredients I knew we did not need so I completely transformed it and this is what I came up with!
Ingredients:
2/3 cup of unsweetened applesauce
2 tbsp chili powder
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp pepper
1 can 6 oz. tomato paste (make sure no sugars are added. Natural sugars are fine in moderation)
1 can 8 oz. tomato sauce
2 tbsp coconut amino’s
Not only do I love this recipe because it is so tasty but it is super easy to make as well. In a large mixing bowl just simply measure out all your ingredients and whisk them together for about 1 minute. It will all come together trust me, it will look like actual BBQ sauce and taste like it too! When all the ingredients are whisked together use a BBQ brush to brush on the sauce on your meat. Viola! That’s it! Not complicated, right?
Even my kids could not tell the difference in the sauce vs. what they have had in the past (store bought)! This is definitely a recipe that we will use in our home when we BBQ, no more store bought sauce for us! You have to try it, yum!
Are you doing a low carb diet? If so what recipes have you come up with your family?

I love BBQ sauce and always try all the flavors whenever we eat out. Never tried to make my own though. Any chance of you sending over a bottle?! 😉
I’ve been trying to cut back on carbs. This sounds like a bbq sauce that I want to try.
I have considered the paleo lifestyle too. I am just not in the right mindset yet though sadly!
It looks sooo good! I’ve been looking for paleo recipes and sauces! Thank you for sharing it!
Yes please! I love paleo recipes. I have done a few Whole30s which is very similar. Gotta love giving up sugar – so much more energy!
YES! I agree! It feels good to make the change! I am on my 1st round of Whole30 too!
