How To Add A Pop Of Color To Canvas Sneakers

My oldest daughter is super crafty. Once she gets started on any art related project it is almost impossible to get her to stop.  Recently she asked me if she could color her white canvas sneakers with Sharpie Markers. Typically I was say no but they were only a few bucks at Walmart so we went for it.  When my four year old daughter saw her coloring her shoes she wanted in on it too.  Thankfully someone gave her canvas hand me down sneakers and since they cost me nothing I agreed to allow her to do it as well.

Materials Needed:

Sharpies

White Canvas Sneakers (Walmart has them for about $4.00)

Rubbing Alchohol

Masking Tape

Spray Bottle

An Old Towel or Newspaper

First take out the shoe laces unless you want them colored as well.  Next using masking tape, tape the rubber bottom edges of the shoe so that they stay white.  Using all Sharpie Markers make what ever design you want on the shoes. My girls decided to make rainbow patterns. I have seen some really neat designs over the internet. If you want to get your creative juices flowing just Google it and you will be amazed the designs and creations people have come up with.

Once you are done making your colored designs take your rubbing alcohol and pour it in a spray bottle.  This is where you want to make sure you have an old towel or newspaper underneath the shoes so that you do not get any permanent marker stains anywhere you do not want them.  Then spray the rubbing alcohol all over the shoes which will make the Sharpie Marker run a bit, kind of like a tie dye look. Plus it will permanently set the marker into the shoes.

Set aside to dry.  When completely dry peel off the making tape and put the shoe laces back in the shoes. Now you are ready to wear them!  Cute, huh?
