I love this time of the year.  My kids are doing some camps plus our church has VBS (Vacation Bible Study) so my older son and I volunteer while my little ones participate in the program. This year our theme was ” Ocean Commotion” which is geared to the flood.

The kids did several water related activities, ate themed snacks as well as water related crafts. Two of their crafts were my favorite (one I am sharing now, the other will come shortly).  I typically do not save all my kids crafts because with 6 kids it would be too much so I either take photo’s of them or save my favorites for awhile, some I will not throw away.

The craft I am sharing is not just a craft but it is a toy.  It will not just sit on the shelf and collect dust but it will get played (yes, I have even played with it).

Shark, Paddle Ball

Materials needed:

One 16.9 fl. oz. plastic water bottle with top

1 12 Inch piece of elastic string (approximately 1/16″ in diameter)

1 small rubber bouncy ball

White or blue tissue paper cut into small squares

1 Small piece of white construction paper cut into a zig zap shape (these will be the shark teeth)

1 Pair of googly eyes

Hot glue plus white Elmer’s Glue

First clean your bottle and then cut it in half.  Once the inside is completely dried take a small amount of hot glue and run it along the top edge where you cut so that the edges are not rough and kids do not cut themselves.  While the kids are gluing their tissue paper squares onto the bottle a grown-up can poke the hole through the ball (you could use something sharp like an ice pick or even a standard drill) then thread the elastic string through the ball.  Once the elastic string is through the ball make sure you tie a secure tight knot through the bottom.  When the kids are done gluing the tissue paper have them glue the googly eyes on the bottle near the top will get screwed on.  Next glue the paper shark teeth along the area where you cut the bottle. Finally when everything is done drying take the long piece of the other end of the elastic string and sandwich it between the bottle and the screw top. The top screwed on the bottle will secure the elastic string.

Shark, Paddle Ball

To play:

Hold the portion of the water bottle where screw top is, move the bottle back and forth to try to get the ball in the “shark’s mouth”

Here are some other kids crafts made from recyclable materials:

Critter Cave

Toilet Paper Tube Owl

4th of July Tin Can Windsocks

Soda Bottle Planters

What fun crafts are you making with your kids this summer?

  1. Nicole,

Cute craft project for the kiddies! When I saw your post, I thought about an article DH shared with me last night about the Great White Sharks infesting the waters of Cape Cod (I believe) this year. I think the article said there’s like 150 recorded Great Whites. I instantly thought about the 70s horror flick, “Jaws”. Trust me, no one needs to tell me, “STAY OUT OF THE WATER”. Have a lovely summer!
