I am often asked the question, ” Do you homeschool during the summer”? My response is always yes. We finish up any curriculum that we have not completed, I focus on reading and of coarse we have fun things scheduled like play dates, movies, etc.
In a few weeks our homeschool group will be starting our summer reading book club. The kids will read and then share the book they read about with the rest of the children and in return they will be rewarded. I personally think a book club will keep the kids accountable.
I have done quite a bit of research on free summer reading programs which is motivation for my kids because many of these programs offer some type of incentive. I am sharing them with you so that you can do them with your children.
Our favorite one is the Barnes and Noble summer reading program. Children read any eight books this summer and record them in their Summer Reading Journal, noting which part of the book was their favorite, and why. Then bring their completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store between May 16th and September 5th, 2017.
Local county libraries participate in reading programs as well. For instance our local county libraries gives our reading logs and after a certain amount of minutes read the kids turn in their logs for free baseball game tickets. While our city library gives our reading books. My kids have participated the library reading programs every year and received wonderful prizes.
Pizza Hut offers two programs for children. The summer reading program Pizza Hut has partnered with Candlewick Press to bring your kids summer reading activities. You can also enroll your children for 2017-2018 program.
Sylvan has a program called Book Adventure which is a fun, free way to motivate your children to read. Kids in grades K-8 can search for books, read
them offline, come back to quiz on what they’ve read, and earn prizes for their reading success.
Kids can be a Happy Camper with the reading program at Scholastic. Read and log minutes all summer. Then unlock activities & earn rewards. Plus kids can enter for a chance to win Klutz books!
What child does not like to get video game tokens at Chuck E Cheese? Kids can earn free 10 Chuck E. Cheese tokens for reading each day for 2 weeks. Download and print out Chuck E.’s Rewards Calendars. Mark the days off with a pen or sticker as your child accomplishes their goals. Bring in a completed calendar to Chuck E. Cheese’s and receive 10 free tokens as a reward.

I really like the idea of having the kids read during the summer. I think that kids should continue to do some school in the summer so they don’t lose everything they learned.
Summer reading programs are so great for keeping the kids’s noodles noodling and for keeping reading fun. I love them.

That is awesome! We have about 4 reading programs in our area. We live just on the outside of Atlanta, and lots of kids get in on the action.
We have all our kids get in on the summer reading program action. Even our youngest has to have daily story time where we read to her as part of her “reading program”.
Summer reading programs are awesome! They are such a great way to get kids to read. The local movie theater’s in our area often offer free movie tickets when you fill out a reading log, which is really cool. You might want to check if theater’s near you offer the same.

To encourage reading this summer I do want my kids to participate in a local summer reading program. I think it is great that places care about our youth’s reading.
