Cell Phone Etiquette Tips

I love my cell phone, I admit if I accidentally leave the house without it I feel lost! Cell phones are convenient yes but have we spiraled out of control?  Do we really need to be on our cell phones every free second we have? I think cell phones are great for emergencies or looking up directions when out or even taking pictures our kids when we do not have a camera with us.

There is the issue of kids and cell phones. Just the other day our family was at the zoo and a child was climbing in a play area while playing on the phone! What happened to kids being kids? When I was a kid on long drives I either read a book or colored but now kids have phones in their hands – young kids too! Now I am not saying I do not let my kids play apps but the key is all about moderation.

Have you been out to eat before or looked forward to spending time with some and the other person was continually on their phone? There is no other way of saying it, it is rude!   In my opinion I am there with you and I want to share dialog with you. I understand emergencies happen but self-control is definitely needed.

If I am with another adult or with my children and I need to make a phone call I ask myself, can my conversation wait?  If it can I will wait to make the call later. Plus I do not like other people listening to my conversations.  When with company give them your complete attention.  Minimize your time on your phone and enjoy your time with your kids and/or company! A good friend said something to me once, cherish your kids because as they grow you cannot get those past years back. It’s true! So instead of e-mailing, instant chatting or texting when you are out with your kids cherish those moments and put the phone down.

Do not text while driving, this is my BIGGEST pet peeve! There is nothing more frustrating when being stuck behind a driver texting or on their phone because 9 times out of 10 they are not paying attention and these are the people who cause accidents. They are too busy looking down at their device which can wait. Worse comes to worse peak at it at the stop light.

When in public and your on your cell phone be respectful to those around you. I do not want my kids listening to the cursing and thrash talk. We do not use that type of language in our home, but unfortunately my kids have heard words their little ears shouldn’t because of other people’s conversations on their cell phones.

Turn your cell phone off when at places like church, school, movies, etc.  If your cell needs to be on than turn it on vibrate that way there are no distractions from the ringing. My pastor will call someone out if their phone goes off during church service, I do not blame him.

I am not denying that cell phones offer great benefits. They are convenient to check the internet, make phone calls, play on apps. Or even keep kids busy when needed.  I myself have to evaluate if I am being considerate to those around me. Do I need to be on the phone when I am with friends or family? What are your cell phone pet peeves?

  1. I had to say that should all be common sense, but I think commonsense is been thrown out the window lately. Thanks for the reminder I hope most people will take this to heart.

    • I agree it is mostly common sense but I think people are so wrapped up in their own little worlds that they do nto realize what they are doing safety wise and not using manners.

  2. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this. I cannot believe how many people out there lose all semblance of manners when it comes to their phones.

  3. I totally agree. Very few people actually show cell phone etiquette these days. I find the more I disconnect from my phone while surrounded by others, the more connected with them I become.

  4. Jenna Wood says:

I actually use an app that puts my phone in a sort of ‘away’ status when it senses speeds a car can manage- it has a timeout on either end of the speed movement so you don’t access your phone until 60 seconds after the vehicle has stopped.

  5. Sadly, what used to be common sense manners seems to be lost these days. I’ll admit to using technology more than I did 10 years ago, but I still make it a point to live in the moment.

  6. My hubby always struggles when his daughter visits because she never puts her phone down. HA! I tell you, my little man got an iPod for Christmas and we won’t allow him to take it to dinner, church, or family events

  7. These are great points. It surprises me how many people text while driving. There’s no way someone can be fully aware of the road when they do that.

  8. I have a love-hate relationship with my phone!! These are great tips it’s so easy to slip up on proper cell phone etiquette!

  9. Until about a year ago, I thought I might be the only person in the world without a cell phone. lol. So I definitely use proper etiquette! Great tips!

  10. It’s so easy to forget to turn off the ringer sometimes. I’m always so embarrassed when I forget! Thanks for these tips and reminders about etiquette.

  11. Definitely agree, cell phone etiquette is very important. Nothing worse than being behind someone on the road that’s texting.

  12. Great advice and really anyone with a phone should abide by these. The ringer going off is just my biggest annoyance. Especially at church.

  13. I love that you bring this to the fore front. I can’t live without my cell phone but I do make a point respect those in front or around me first

  14. You are so right. I hate when i go out to lunch with someone and they are on the phone the whole time. Texting and driving is also a pet peeve of mine. It is so dangerous and you are endangering everyone around you.

  15. I totally agree. I was in the airport with a man on his cell phone the entire time I was waiting for the plane. He cursed loudly through the entire conversation and kept bragging about his intimate relationships. I couldn’t wait to board the plane and get away from him!

  16. I miss the days when cellphones weren’t so common place. Its so frustrating going out for dinner with a group of friends and using them to their phones. It’s so sad to think we are in a place now that we have to remind everyone what’s expected of them.

  17. If only everyone would read this post and put into practice, we would have a such much better world!

  18. Amy Desrosiers says:

I actually do not use or own a cell phone. My husband has one but I just do not want one or like them much.

  19. These are good points and I hope a lot of people will read this. So many people are not showing cellphone etiquette.

  20. Christina Aliperti says:

People seem to be obsessed with their phones. I think it should be mandatory to take an etiquette course for mobile phone use, lol. I have seen people in restaurants standing on their chairs to take a picture of their food. Horrible!!

  21. Rebecca Swenor says:

These are indeed great etiquette tips for cell phones. I really have to agree that we do need etiquette when it comes to our cell phones. We all need to set limitations when it comes to our cell phones and device. Thanks for the tips.

  22. Great tips Nicole! I must admit I have been on the phone when in the store and it is really disrespectful.

  23. Really great tips! I think the younger generation born into cellphones can really benefit from some basic etiquette tips.

No texting and driving is a serious concern!

    Jillian

  24. Yes these are really great tips!! I try to be conscious at a restaurant and not take out my phone (unless I’m by myself of course!) and yes absolutely NO texting and driving. Too scary!!

  25. Maryann D. says:

I do think everyone should read these tips! I do not like to be on the cell phone a lot, but I do know many people who love it!

  26. I do agree. You don’t need your cell phone on when in church. I have seen that alot and it’s annoying.

  27. Dina Demarest says:

Cell phones have become such a big part of our lives. There are times that we simply don’t need them. It is nice to have them with you, but not necessarily out all the time.

  28. Great tips. I hate to admit I am guilty of a few of these. But I am trying to get better πŸ™‚

  29. Great tips and ones that I live by! I wish everyone abided by these rules. Cellphones are fantastic but it’s best to be safe and respectful.

  30. Not texting while driving is super important. There are so many accidents that are caused and lives have been lost because of that

  31. CourtneyLynne says:

To be honest I use to be horrible about this! It wasn’t until
People started doing the rude cellphone things to me that I realized it had to stop! Now I’m pretty good about having my phone away when it needs to be.
