DIY Popsicle Stick Harmonica #KidsCraft

One of the things I love about Classical Conversations is that every week the kids need to do a presentation in front of their class, even my 4 year old has too!  Each week the kids are given a topic to present on, last weeks was to make a musical instrument that plays actual music. The kids had to explain how they made the instrument, how it works and then play in. My kids chose harmonica. Thanks to Pinterest we found how to make one.

DIY Popsicle Stick Harmonica

Supplies to make one:

2 Popsicle sticks (I used the wider ones)

2 rubberbands

1 piece of paper cut and same width and length of the Popsicle sticks

1 toothpick

First cut the paper to size, we traced the Popsicle stick over it and then cut it out. Place the paper in between the two Popsicle sticks and then rubber band each end of the sticks. For the toothpicks we placed it over the outside of the Popsicle stick to measure the same dimension (the toothpick needs to be the same width as the Popsicle stick), once measured cut two pieces to size. Wedge one piece of the toothpick on one side of the paper inside near the rubber bands and then do the same on the other side of the harmonica.

This whole craft took us only 15 minutes to make 4 of them! Side note: the paper inside the Popsicle sticks is what makes the vibration musical noise and since it is only paper kids need to be careful not to get too much spit on the paper when blowing because it will get all soggy and fall apart. They held up nicely too and the other kids in their classes were asking how to make them!

Have your kids made their own musical instruments, if so what did they make?
