My kids can sit and play with Play-Doh for hours. I admit I often sit and play with it with them! Not only is it a classic toy but it is so versatile. Kids can create, mold, construct, sculpt and use their imaginations. As an educator I use it in our homeschooling. Not only is it perfect to keep my little ones busy while I homeschool my older children but they can learn while playing with it too! Recently I found a new way to teach my preschooler how to learn and recognize and trace his letters and numbers by making him Play-Doh learning mats.
I printed off block letters so that my son could shape the alphabet and numbers. This project was super easy to do. Once the letters and numbers were printed I laminated them front and back so that he could practice at a time. When he was done he could flip the mat over and work on another letter or number. If you do not have a laminator no worries you can always use clear plastic page protectors instead.
Materials Needed:
Printed letters and/or numbers
Copy paper or cardstock
Laminator or clear page protectors
Play-Doh
My son rolled out he then traced the letters and/or numbers on his mats with the Play-Doh. He enjoyed it so much that he did not realize that he was learning at the same time!

I loved Play-Doh when I was a child! It’s such a creative learning tool, and helps with coordination as well. Such a sweet idea!
Yes it does. When my little man was in early intervention, they used Play Doh all the time.
That’s very cool. I have always loved Play-Doh and I know my kids play it everywhere, but for some reason we don’t have it here. I’ll have to change that!
PlayDoh is so timeless! I have some great memories of my childhood with PlayDoh, that’s for sure!

PlayDoh is so fun, my daughter sadly learned how playdo drys out last time she was with a group of kids playing with playdo she said you need to get the lid on it before it drys out. I wish there was a non dying out kind of playdo.
These look great for non-traditional learners, like my son! And terrific for fine motor! What fun!
Play-Doh is seriously the best. There are so many learning activities you can use it for. I’m loving those letter mats.
We love playdoh. A good activity is to hide beans. Letting you child use his sense of touch to hunt them out.

This activity is a great idea. The kids work their motor skills and learn letter at the same time!
I love playdoh but I wonder if they got rid of the weird smell. that was the only thing I didn’t like about playdoh.

Always loved Play Doh as a kid. The iconic smell of it totally brings me back to my childhood. Its great as a “fidget” for kids who have trouble sitting still too. Something to keep their hands busy.

That’s a great way to play with Play Doh, however Play Doh is banned in my house. It’s too messy.
I remember PlayDoh! It was so fun to create stuff with it. I definitely attribute all of my success to positive play experiences.
This is a brilliant idea. My 4 year old who just started Kinder this year needs to work on his letters and I think this would be a brilliant way to get him to do it happily!

Playdoh is one of the only things that can keep my twin nieces busy for at least an hour. These mats are such an awesome idea. They are perfect for the stage my nieces are in right now.
Yeah, I sit and play with them too. I’ve seen dads, uncles, and just grown friends stop and play too, if I’ve taken it out for the kids while they’re visiting. 🙂

That is a very good and easy idea to follow. We like to create animals and houses with playdoh.
