I enjoy historical based movies and books that is why I am super excited about Roma Downing’s The Dovekeepers Miniseries which airs on CBS, today  March 31 thru Wednesday, April 1. This two-night miniseries is based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same title written by Alice Hoffman.

Set in ancient Israel, The Dovekeepers is based on the true events at Masada in 70 C.E. After being forced out of their home in Jerusalem by the Romans, 900 Jews were ensconced in a fortress at Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. Besieged at Masada, the Jews held out for months against the vast Roman armies.

The Dovekeepers recounts the events from the perspective of a few extraordinary women who arrive at Masada with unique back stories, but a common bond for survival. Additionally, these women, who work together daily as dovekeepers, are all concealing substantial secrets.  I found this relationship with these women the best part of the series.  Through their difficulties they found love and commonality with each other.  They remain strong with each other’s encouragement.

Not only is it a story about women who work together but the tales of heroism by the Jews against the Roman armies are heroic!  With only 900 Jewish men, women and children they were able to stand firm against the thousands of Romans. This in itself made the movie a sit on the edge of your seat, anxiously awaiting what will happen next!

See the twists and turns of this miniseries which airs on CBS tonight at  9/8  c.  You can find more Dovekeepers on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
