I have never heard of World Water Day until this year. It started in 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the first World Water Day. The UN works on many water entities such as distributing drinking water during disasters, protecting ecosystems, making sure that water is of sufficient quality, ensuring that our cities have enough water infrastructure, measuring progress of access to sanitation, looking at how we will have enough water to make food.
Family Christian is partnering with World Vision in an effort to help people all over the world by showing the love of Christ and providing basic needs. It is easy to sponsor a child through World Vision. World Vision has a water fund which you can donate small amounts up to very large amounts.
I decided to do a water theme activity with my children.
In our homeschool curriculum we learned about The Ice Age from a Biblical stand point. A glacier is made up of thousands of tons of ice which is layered in sheets and covers miles and miles. The context of the lesson was why did the earth ever get that cold and why did it warm again? My children and I went back to the Great Flood (In Genesis). Before the flood it had never rained. Scientist believe that there was a type if large cloud or blanket of vapor that covered the whole earth. Which is even described in the book of Genesis 2:5-6 – 5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.
The blanket of vapor over the earth insulated the world so there was no need for rain. The flood in Genesis rained 40 days and 40 nights causing many changes to earth. In Genesis 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. This verse describes a great volcanic upheavals where the earth’s crust was fractured. This entire event went on for the whole time of the flood until God stopped it Genesis 8:1-2.4 From a Christian standpoint men, women, children and animals lived. Our lesson asked what happened to the dinosaurs? There are many theories. One idea is that after the flood there was not enough vegetation / food for these large beasts. Other think the climate was a problem for the dinosaurs to survive.
This hands on activity gave my kids a chance to learn about the Ice Age and dinosaurs. It was a great way to cover all aspects including water!
Materials Needed:
Plastic Containers With Lids
Small Plastic Dinosaur Toys
Water
Butter Knife
Since these are plastic toys some may float so start off by adding about 1/2 inch to the bottom of the container and then freeze. Add the small dinosaurs more water and then freeze again. Once frozen pop the ice out of the container and put on a large cookie sheet. I gave my older kids a butter knife to pick out the dinosaurs out of the ice.

Digging dinos out of a frozen ice block is such a creative way to teach kids about the Ice Age!

This is a cool educational activity. We did something like this with our homeschoolers using baked oatmeal and raisins. We taught about excavation.

Great activity for kids. You have got to watch Water Wars. It is not a kid movie but it is discusses the privatization of water and is super educational for older kids.
