Why Our Family Chooses To Homeschool

So…… Why do I homeschool? Before I had children I would have never thought I would have be a homeschooling mama. I had never even heard of homeschooling as a child or as a young adult. When our 1st child was around the age of 2 I met some homeschool moms.  They educated me what homeschooling was all about. It was something that I definitely wanted to try. Why did I want to try it?

why we homeschool

1) The first and foremost reason is God. I believe God put the women mentioned above in my life to educate me about homeschooling. Firming believing that God has called me to homeschool.  There are days I want to throw in the towel and then I quickly remember that is not His will for my family. It is about obedience.

When I went to school our principle lead prayer over the intercom system each morning. Now you can’t even pray in school.  Not only do I want to begin our homeschooling day with prayer but I want their daily education to be Christ centered.  The curriculum I have chosen in our homeschooling is Biblical based.

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Deuteronomy 6:7
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Isaiah 54:13
All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.

Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

How can I teach my kids properly if they are not with me all day and I do not all their comings and goings?

 2) A little about our public school system in the county we live in two words — OVER CROWDED! I know I went to school here!  When I went to school there was such a problem with over crowding that there was an abundance of  portable classrooms.   The teacher child ratio is not enough. There are too many students in one class room with only one teacher. Teachers are having to spend time correcting behavioral issues and children are not getting the full teaching they need. What about a child that is having difficulty in their academics, they are not getting it and falling through the cracks of the school system?  Some children are needing more one on one.

 3)  Our schools here teach things that I do not agree with: sex education in Kindergarten!  Why do I want a stranger teaching my children that?  At the age of five my daughter does not know anything about sex let alone same sex marriage?  Personally I believe that is the parent’s responsibility.  What happened to teaching geography and cursive, that is not taught in the elementary schools either.

4)  Kids grow so fast and they are so impressionable at an early age.  I find homeschooling a great opportunity for – character building, family time, Spiritual and it can be fun! The world is so busy, kids are sent to school all day and parents are getting home late and not getting to spend the time with their kids like they would want to. I really do not want to miss anything because before I know it they will be grown and out of the house.  I do not want to look back when they are grown and regret that I only got to spend 3 hours with them a day. It does take a bit of sacrifice with my husband working and living on one income, not living beyond our means but we find it well worth it. There is little me time but there will be plenty of that when they are grown, everything is for a season. Right now it’s their time.

 5)  Academically homeschoolers typically rate 37% points higher than public school students. I am not trying to sound prideful and I am not saying my kids are more intelligent than a public school child but the average homeschool 8th grade student performs four grade levels above the national average (Rudner study).  The great thing about homeschool is that I can teach subjects and teach at the right pace for each of my children. As mentioned before giving them the one on one attention. For instance my oldest son is not good in math so my husband sits with him every night and reviews his daily math with him as well as doing drills, etc. with him that he just would bot get in a public school setting.  Not only that but I can tailor my curriculum to their needs.  On top of this the public schools are not teaching things that I think should still be taught like cursive and finance lessons for school.

6) I want to know how my children are socializing with. I want to immerse my children around families that I know and will be good for them now and in the long run.  In a school I would not know who they are hanging around and what they are doing.  My kids friends, their parents are my friends as well. I look for them to be around like minded families.

1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

7)  I have seen first hand what peer pressure can do and I know that they need to make mistakes to learn from them. I would hate for them to make the same mistakes I made as a child because I did not have a Christian upbringing. Mistakes I regret till this day but learning from them as a mom. The peer pressure of make-up, modesty, etc. Wanting to do it because so and so does it. I want to preserve my children’s innocence as long as I can. Not to mention thankfully I do not have to deal with getting 5 kids up super early to get them to school, packing lunches, school uniforms, etc.

These are all my family’s reasons. Everyone has their own convictions. I know homeschooling is not for everyone but it is for us. (please be respectful, these reasons are why we homeschool, I understand not everyone may agree with them but it is what is on our hearts)

  1. Robin (Masshole Mommy) says:

I think each family has to do what works for them. For me, it’s public schools.

  2. i love what you wrote and agree with all your points. I commend you for you bravery and obedience to God.. My LO is going to be going to the age of going to school and I’d really love to homeschool for the reasons you’ve listed but I’m constantly doubting myself and plus the fact that most of my friends/family are against it(and constantly trying to scare me) doesn’t really help. I pray that God will help me make the right choice

  3. I have to say,… I know nothing about Home Schooling. We have 3 nieces in my Hubs family that does Homeschool.

  4. My kids are in public schools there are services that the public provides for my child that I other wise can not provide such as extra tutors, Speech, Ot and Pt and I do those appointments out side of my home but I also take my daughter to church twice a week and we are very active so she has a foundation for being Christ centered with out over baring her. We pray every night when she goes to bed and every morning before she goes to school I am church sectary and keep active with kids camps. I do love the scriptures you have quoted here though. Another link up is great. I’m not trying to convince you not to home school as I typed this I thought maybe it would seem that was what was trying to come out. I am just simply putting out there why I don’t home school. To each there own as we are created and made unique in his image. Blessings my friend.

  5. These are fantastic reason for homeschool. My kids go to Catholic school. I don’t think I personally have the patience to homeschool my kids!

  6. Great post! I was homeschooled from Kindergarten through 8th grade, myself!

  7. Sex in Kindergarten? That is way too early. I am lucky we don’t have this in our public shcool

  8. It is so important to be involved in the education of our children. Knowing who they are socializing with is very important I agree

  9. I like the Socializing Idea. There are Parents who spend time to actually “parent” their children and instill core values ad teach them right from wrong. Then there are other Parents who have children and that’s it. I’m always afraid my children will pick up the bad habits from those children

  10. I homeschool my son to help him get the extra attention he needs in some areas. My daughter graduated from a public school.

  11. We started homeschooling last year when my son was in 4th grade. It’s been awesome for him. My other son still attends public school because that’s what works for him. I live with one shoe in each world.

  12. I homeschool for a lot of the same reasons. I genuinely love being around my children more than most moms I’m finding. LOL I go small groups and I’m involved in activities with other moms and I really miss my kids when I’m not with them but no one else really seems too.. LOL

  13. Thanks for sharing your story. I could never have homeschooled my kids but I’m glad it works for your family.

  14. These are wonderful reasons to homeschool and the very same reasons my mother homeschooled my sister and I for 10 yrs.

  15. I so agree with all the reasons you give. I work in the school system I see it first hand.

  16. I totally respect your reasons for wanting to homeschool. If I could afford it, I would homeschool my boys too.

  17. It’s always interesting reading other people’s reasons for homeschooling. πŸ™‚ We homeschool as well, and honestly it’s never something I though I would do! Turns out I was wrong πŸ™‚

  18. Our public school system is the same way which is why I chose to homeschool 3 years ago. There are many nice times during our days.

  19. I give credit to anyone who home schools. You have to wear many different hats at home and with this hat you have so much responsibility. I have no problem with homeschooling and I think it works well for many.

  20. Although my daughter attends an Early College rather than home schooling, I do have friends that home school. I will refer her to this post so she can keep up the good work!

  21. I would of loved to have home schooled our kids,That is the only regret I have is not trying it out.

  22. I never homeschooled and I don’t think I would have been any good at it. It also wasn’t as popular as it is now.

  23. Jess Weaver says:

I home schooled for a little while. It was an enriching experience for my family.

  24. I think it is amazing that you homeschool. For me, it would not work. Stick by what you believe, and don’t let anyone make you feel like you have to defend your beliefs!

  25. I homeschool my 5 kids and it is both the greatest and hardest thing I have ever done πŸ™‚

  26. I could not agree more! I homeschool my children for all the same reasons! Awesome post!

  27. I love home schooling! I get to help guide the children in learning way more than what is considered core subjects. My kids learn many other types of topics and subjects, plus they get real world expediences that absolutely no public school or private school can ever offer.

  28. I have considered homeschooling at times. My little one just turned 5 and goes to preschool and she really enjoys it so we decided to see how PS goes for her but keep homeschooling open as a possible future option

  29. I like your reasons for homeschooling – I was in Christian Private Schools for a few years and prayer was of course big – I did have my son in a Home School setting at Jr Hi and I so enjoyed being with him – so I did enjoy your post!

  30. I think home schooling makes perfect sense in today’s scholastic environment.

  31. i believe that every family has the right to do what they think is best for their children. For a working mom like me, i could never had the time to sit down for a long time with my kids but i make sure that before the day ends, we will be seating together to study the days school lesson.

  32. That very first reason is reason enough. If that’s what you felt you’re called to do, doing anything else would be a mess. πŸ™‚

  33. These are all great reasons to homeschool. I’ve considered homeschooling my 3-year-old becasue I’m not quite sure how I feel about the curriculum used by the school system in my area.

  34. I totally see where you’re coming from. I don’t think I’m cut out for homeschooling.

  35. Love your reasons. Mine are pretty similar. I chose homeschooling for a lot of reasons.. I can’t narrow it down to one.

  36. Debbie Denny says:

I like all your reasons. Each parent needs to take a part in choosing what their child learns, whether it be homeschool or public.

  37. I’ve been thinking about home schooling for a while now. I see some benefits to this. But I also think it depends on the child and family. Together they need to decide what’s best.

  38. I would love the chance to home school but financially it just doesn’t work for us!
