In our history homeschooling I have been teaching about the Ice Ages using a Christian based curriculum called Mystery of History. I decided to do something fun with the lesson.
Ice Art and Science Experiment
Art because my son got to create the colors with the food coloring, salt and the ice and science to see how quickly it would melt with the salt on it.
I poured water into an empty almond milk carton, put the cap on and placed it in our freezer until it was frozen solid. Once frozen I peeled away the carton which is easy to do once you get it started because the inside was a waxy coating.
Once all the carton is peeled away place the ice block in a baking pan. Grab salt and food coloring and have your kids go to town! First my son drizzled salt on the top of the ice block.
It was time for the creative juices (art) to flow after the salt was coated on the top then we dotted it with different colored food coloring. My littler ones got to see the primary colors mix together forming new colors which was a great lesson for them. The food coloring on the salt left a rough and neat texture and it held the food coloring in place for now at the top of the block.
Then it was time for the science experiment to begin. My son started drizzling the salt on the ice block at 1:33 PM so with the salt on it we wanted to see how quickly the block would melt. Knowing that salt makes ice melt quicker we were timing how long it would take to melt.
We kept the ice block in the pan at room temperature the afternoon. We guessed how long it would take to melt. My kids didn’t think it would be completely melted until the next morning but that was not the case, it was melted that night before they went to bed.
It was not only fun for them to drizzle the salt and food coloring but to see it all melt off into the pan as well as watching the ice block move around in the pan without anyone touching it and then seeing the whole process of it melting was very educational for them. Going from a solid to a liquid all before their very own eyes!

This is a great idea! I will have to share with my sons 2nd grade teacher as they are learning about solids and liquids in science right now.

We have done some frozen ice activities in the past but not this one. My boys would love this! Adding the food coloring makes the salt look pretty cool:)

What a fun experiment! I like the way it looked when they “colored” it. We used to do experiments with dry ice.
How cool is that for a K-5 grade science project. I love to experiment with my kids at home. This one works for a couple of different ages groups so no matter the kids ages they can all help and learn.

This was a neat little experiment! I haven’t done many science experiments with my daughter but I think this is something my nephew (age 6) would enjoy exploring!
oh boy, my grandsons would be all over this the next time they come for a sleepover. It’s got all the elements that kids love!
What an awesome experiment. I will definitely have to try this one with my daughter. We’ve froze things in ice before, like marbles, to see how long it takes for them to unfreeze.
