Corning Museum Of Glass

Last week I shared with you my family’s wonderful experience at The Corning Museum of Glass.  As mentioned I was in awe of how many beautiful pieces of glass this museum housed.. Displaying the world’s best collection of art and historical glass. With more than 3,500 years of history displayed in the Glass Collection Galleries, from the glass portrait of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh to contemporary sculpture made in glass.

Not only was The Corning Museum of Glass family friendly offering several hands on exhibits. Speaking of hands on The Corning Museum of Glass offers a make your own glass experience.  From hot glass working, to flame working, to fusing, to sandblasting—you and your family can do just about anything with glass, with the help of their experienced glass workers.

Yes we made these! My boys made the tear drop ornaments and I made the round ornament.

My two older boys and I got to experience blowing glass, making our own ornaments.

There are opportunities for all ages with no experience is necessary. These short experiences are 20 to 40 minutes in length, depending on the Make Your Own Glass project.

Video of my seven year old son blowing glass.

Making the glass ornaments gave us an amazing experience which allowed us to work with hot glass up close, while staying on the cool end of the glassblowing iron at all times. First we started by choosing the glass colors we wanted to use and the shape of our ornament, and then partnered with one of their professional glassblowers to create our design. Next we were able to shape the ornament by blowing air through the moving blowpipe as the glassblower guides the glass with special tools. Afterwards the glassblower and us had shaped our ornament, it is removed from the blowpipe, a glass loop is added and it is placed in an oven to begin an overnight slow cooling process. Ornaments are ready for pick up the following day. Pretty neat, right?

There are so many amazing different items you can make besides the glass ornament such as: a pumpkin, sculpture, glass flower or wineglass tumbler. Items may vary depending on the time of year. Prices start at $29 and up.

This amazing museum is located in beautiful Corning, New York.  Admission is $16.00 for adults (museum admission is valid for two consecutive days) and children 19 and under are free.  In March 2015 The Corning Museum of Glass will be expanding their 100,000-square-foot North Wing addition which will include a new 26,000-square-foot contemporary art gallery building, as well as one of the world’s largest facilities for glassblowing demonstrations and live glass design sessions. The addition will dramatically enhance the visitor experience for the Museum’s growing domestic and international audiences. Amazing, right? This museum is a must to add to your bucket list of places to go!
