Staying Organized With Our Family Road Trip Binder

The good thing about homeschooling is that taking road trips are flexible because we can school on the go! Our family is preparing for our 1st road trip.  It will be an interesting drive with 5 little ones. I need to stay organized with our itinerary and other travel related information so I came up with a family road trip binder.

Travel While Organized

 Materials:

3 Ring Binder

Clear Sheet Protectors

What’s inside my binder?

~ I made itinerary in Excel for our daily travels. Adding where we will be for each day and what we will be doing.  Plus it has all my confirmation numbers and information on the spreadsheet.

~ Restaurant coupons. Let’s face it we will be traveling I am sure we will be stopping for meals, it’s nice to save a few dollars.

~ Restaurant and gas gift cards and attraction tickets.

~ Other miscellaneous papers such as a listing of museums throughout the US where we can use our Science Museum passes for.

~ Extra sheet protectors for any brochures, maps and/or business cards from sponsors we pick up during our travels.

Travel while organized

How do you organize any of your paperwork when you travel? I like the idea that everything is in one place, no fumbling around in a bag or wallet for tickets or confirmation numbers.

  1. I didn’t have anything as neat as your binder but when we moved from CA to VA back in 1992 we drove, I kept a journal and took photos along the way. This post of yours reminded me of it. Have fun on your family road trip!

  2. That is so neat! I would never have thought of doing that honestly.

  3. What a smart idea. We’re going on vacay next week – a little road trip and I’m def going to do this!

  4. I love this idea! We travel a lot so this would be perfect for my kids.

  5. This is a really great idea! One of the things we would love to do with my daughter after she graduates (next year) is take a couple week road trip and hit as many states as we can before she heads of to college. This idea would be a great help for us!!

  6. What a great way to organize! This would be great for our upcoming trip, I will have to make one.

  7. That is a great way to stay organized when you travel! Great idea to keep brochures collected. Our always gets mashed up in the luggage.

    • Amy Desrosiers says:

This is a good idea for brochures! I love collecting them from rest areas, but never have a place for them.

  8. What a cool idea!!! I do NOT do that now, but this is something I will have to do! We travel a lot, so this would come in handy!

  9. That is a great idea. I am planning a roadtrip/camping trip across Canada next year.

  10. This is such a wonderful idea! We need to get our car working again first, though! Lol 🙂

  11. What a cool idea! I wouldn’t have thought to do this, but it would be super handy to have. Thanks for the inspiration!

  12. Now, that is really impressive! I don’t think I’ve ever been that organized for a trip!

  13. I love planning trips that way! I’ve now switched from a binder to using evernote on my phone, where I can link to attraction websites, etc. but the process is the same.

    Happy travels!

  14. What a great idea! I’m always super organized when traveling, especially a road trip. I love the idea of having everything in one place like this.

  15. cute idea 🙂 adorable

  16. we’ve done this too for years. works out well!

  17. Road trips are so fun to plan. We go by technology alone, but that’s not as fun. I remember the days of maps and having to pull over to consult them no matter how careful we were. Those are cool memories. 🙂

  18. How nice. This is such a great idea. I love the organization.

  19. This really is such a great idea. I don’t travel much but if I do, I am going to use something like this. I am always trying to keep track of things and this is much easier.

  20. What a great idea for trip planning. It’s always better to cover your bases BEFORE going on a trip. I say this from experience.

  21. I need to make a binder like this for my next trip. I always end up forgetting at least one thing. Usually, I forget more than that!

  22. Jenna Wood says:

We save gift cards for when we travel too, it’s just nice to have that little extra treat and not have to worry about cash and cards all the time. Thanks for the great tips!

  23. Melissa Smith says:

This is such a great idea! I always feel like an unorganized fool when it comes to planning even the littlest of trips with young ones in tow.

  24. Oh my goodness, what a great idea. The last time we went on vacation I was stuck trying to download and purchase groupons on site and my phone wouldn’t work. This would have come in handy.

  25. Jim Striegel says:

What a great idea! I wish we had this when the kids were little.

  26. Wow! This is a super idea. It would be great to be so organized and ready in advance for travel.

  27. Marjory Johnson says:

OMG…I so love these ideas! Thank you so much!!!

  28. This is so clever, and would be very handy to have for our next road trip.

  29. This is such a great idea! I always have a notebook that I stuff things into, but of course, everything is always falling out all over! I am definitely going to get a binder!!

  30. I use one of those accordion files but it is essentially the same basic idea! I never thought of coupons, great idea!

  31. Amy Desrosiers says:

I keep all my travel tickets and such in an envelope. I think a binder would be useful to since we are a family of five.

  32. Darling idea! I always have a binder, but mine isn’t always as cute!

  33. I’m extremely under-organized when it comes to most family trips. However, on our Disney trips, I have everything completely mapped out on a spreadsheet!

  34. My eyes quickly landed on that Dunks gift card! Great idea!

  35. Oh how fun, we need one of these! We take so many trips!

  36. I need to create one of these for my family

  37. This is a terrific idea for long cross country trips!

  38. ugh, I wish we had this when we were growing up! Then maybe my brother wouldn’t have spent so much time annoying me! Great ideas!

  39. Ann Bacciaglia says:

Smart idea! I love how organized you are and how this would simplify the travelling chaos. Thanks for sharing,

  40. That is such a cool idea. Way to stay organized!

  41. Wonderful idea! This would be wonderful to have on the road trips we have planned for next Summer.

  42. Wow, you look very well organized. I seriously lack this skill. My paperwork is always all over the laptop bag ;-(

  43. I also have a travel binder. So handy to have everything in one place.

  44. I’ve actually never done this. We’ve only done a road trip once and it was a 23hr trip so with me being the only driver I was trying to get there as soon as I can. That’s a great idea though.

  45. This is a great idea since traveling with kids usually ends up with the car being a mess from top to bottom! It’s so easy to lose things, and I tend to throw EVERYthing away when I get frustrated. I’d love to have everything important in one place.

  46. We did that when we went to Hawaii for our honeymoon. Never thought about doing that for family trips though.

  47. Natalie Applewhite says:

    I love this idea!!!

  48. Where were you for my last road trip?! It’s a great idea. That stuff can get so disorganized and hard to deal with in a car. I found you through the Show & Share link party. I’d love it if you stopped by sometime 🙂

  49. katrina g says:

what a great idea. I will have to remember this for our next trip.

  50. What a great way to stay organized. I usually just use a coupon holder, but a binder would probably work better for longer trips.

  51. Awesome way to stay organized!

  52. I organize by giving it all to my wife to organize it.. lol if i keep them i get paranoid that i will lose them.

  53. looks like you are very organised.. Happy travelling…

  54. Julie Wood says:

This is really nice how you have your Family Road trip organized. I usually just put every thing in folder or binder. I need to be more organized like you!

  55. Maryann D. says:

It is wonderful to be organized and this planner seems terrific. I do know I feel better when I have things in order.
