Tips for a Fun and Frugal 4th of July Picnic
Part of the magic of summer is celebrating Independence Day with family and friends. Hosting a backyard picnic creates something for your kids to look forward to and helps them learn the importance of being patriotic. You can keep it frugal by making it a pot luck and picking up some basic party supplies from the discount store. Here are some tips for a fun and frugal 4th of July picnic.

Make It An Outside Event
Try to keep the traffic into the house down to a minimum to prevent heat from outdoors from warming up the cool indoors. That means you need to plan ahead.
• Put drinks on ice outside in coolers.
• Fire up the barbecue and cook outside instead of inside.
• Keep a box full of necessities under your serving table. It might include extra trash bags and paper plates, a roll of paper towels and some patriotic party favors for your guests.
• Offer plenty of shady seating for your guests, whether it’s a table umbrella or under a tree.

Tableware Tips
Pick out a combination of red, white and blue cups, plates, tableware and plastic tablecloths. Buying these items in bulk makes the unit price much lower. You can use any leftovers for birthday parties and other picnics. They’re also good for any other patriotic occasions.

Decorate
Make it a fun and festive atmosphere by decorating your back yard. Hang bunting and crepe paper streamers. A few foil balloons anchored with balloon weights can make it feel more like a party. Bunches of colorful latex balloons on the mailbox and the back gate will help your guests find their way.

Play Some Games
Kids love games. Keep them low budget by getting back to basics. Try musical chairs, a water balloon toss and some relay races. Use inexpensive party favors from the discount store for prizes.

Have some fun this 4th of July with a family-friendly event. Don’t forget to set aside a moment to ask your guests of all ages to share why they’re happy to live in this wonderful country. You’ll probably get some cute and heartfelt answers.
