I recently did a homeschool science experiment post that I shared with you. My kids and I grew crystals on pipe cleaners. This was a such a hit in our home so I decided we would do them again but instead of a snowflake shape we did hearts for Valentine’s.
Borax
Boiling Water
Glass Cup or container
Yarn
Pencil
Pipe cleaner
Take a pipe cleaner and form it into whatever design up chose (ours was a heart) then tie the pipe cleaner design to a piece of yarn on one end and on the other end tie the yarn to a pencil. Next I heated up my water in the microwave but you could use the stove top as well (use enough water t fill a mason jar or a 8 oz. glass container). Then add 1/3 cup of Borax and mix. Then placed the pipe cleaner into the water with the pencil rested over the top of the glass container. Leave alone, do not keep taking out of the water to see if there are any crystals, within a few hours you should see some growing on the pipe cleaner. I left our pipe cleaner in the water for a week and it was filled with a lot of crystals! Finally I cut the yarn away for our crystal and viola, instant crystals!
You have time to make one, start today and you will have your own crystals on Valentine’s Day!

This would be great for teachers! I have a lot of elementary school teachers that would be interested in doing this with their classes.
This is such a fun experiment with kids. My son got a crystal growing kit once and he loved watching them grow.
