Plans For Our New Homeschool Room — Learn & Link (With Linky)

This homeschooling year has been  a bit more difficult. Our homeschooling area is in our living room which basically takes up most of our downstairs. So now while my 3rd and 1st graders are doing their homeschooling our preschooler and toddler can get a bit loud. So I have to redirect them and make sure they are constantly busy so they do not disturb my older boys. Now my baby is mobile – crawling all over the place so that adds to it.  I have managed so far but it has been a struggle.

My husband and I brainstormed and came up with an idea. I am so excited! Here is the scoop – we are turning 1/2 of our garage into our homeschool room!  The downside is that we have accumulated SO much stuff over the course of 8 years of buying this home. With 5 children you can imagine the stuff. Plus things we do not know what to do with we toss it in the garage. Pretty bad, huh? The upside is that we will be donating and throwing away quite a bit of stuff and by August my kids will have a homeschool room! Why August because we start our new homeschool year then – I will then have a 4th grader, 2nd grader and a kindergartner!

Plus I will have the little ones in the livingroom area with their montessori activities and toys while my kids are homeschooling in their new room. Both areas are near each other straight through our kitchen. I will leave the door open in the school room and I can go back and forth because the little ones and the homeschoolers.

There is a lot to be done other than just clearing our the garage. We will need to have the air conditioning and more lighting put in. Plus I have have to give it a school room touch! We will close this area off with a door and my husband will have all his tools, our kids bikes and so on the other side of the garage.  Time to roll up our sleeves and get busy! I will keep you posted and post the finished project!

  1. I am so jealous! We don’t even have a space that size for us. We’re moving soon so I am hoping we finally have a nice space for next year with two officially homeschooling and one pre-k/k age. Hoping we either have an extra room or a large enough living room to create a nice little school area.

  2. Wow, you really have a wonderful plan and this is going to be incredible! I’m excited for you!

  3. Amy Desrosiers says:

I love your cubbies for all your books and supplies! I think your area looks very classroom like now!

  4. Wow, that’s going to be awesome! Great idea to use part of the garage since you could afford to take over that space! My sister in law revamped their entire garage to make two bedrooms and it was awesome! I love that huge book shelf in your current school room!

  5. You did a great job. When I homeschooled my son, we used our living room.

  6. wow- big, exciting things coming for you this year!!

  7. That sounds so exciting! Can’t wait to see you post your final project!

  8. Turning the garage into your school area sounds like a great plan. Your garage looks like ours…big job! I am positive it will be very nice when you are finished.

  9. This is a great goal. Hope it works out fantastic for you!

  10. I think this is going to look amazing!

  11. What a fun project, looks like you have a lot of cleaning to do but I am sure the excitement of wanting to get it done will give you extra cleaning energy. I can’t wait to see the finished project : )

  12. I’m so envious of your setup. I am not able to homeschool, but would love to be able to do this.

  13. I love your homeschool room! That would be an ideal area for us if I do choose to homeschool our son. I can’t wait to see what your new area looks like once you’re finished!

  14. I love your homeschooling transformation! Space is crucial when you have different grade levels to teach.

  15. That is going to be such a huge transition! Can’t wait to see it completed! I would absolutely be thrilled to have something like your current home school space. Right now we have the kitchen table. Though we don’t home school; but I want to have an “education” section where all homework can be done and I can supplement what they learn in school with our own “mini” home school curriculum.

  16. My sister-in-law homeschools her two children and their house is a shoebox. Two big dogs on top of it all. I would ask her where she teaches, but my brother-in-law said she is not confident in her decision to homeschool, so I don’t want to ask her questions about it. I assume they just sit at the kitchen table or sofa. There is nowhere else to sit.

  17. WOW-WOW!! That is an amazing space already!! I LOVE that storage you have made!

  18. What a great idea! The current area you have in the living room looks amazing. What will you come up with when you have a whole room for yourself, lol

  19. Helene Cohen Bludman says:

I bet your new room will be fantastic! Be sure to post before and after photos.

  20. Wow, you have a lot of work ahead of you! I can’t wait to see what you end up doing!

  21. Oh I LOVE it as-is but I can’t wait to see what you do with the garage!

  22. What a great idea! I have contemplated homeschooling but worry about having enough space – the garage is a great place!

  23. Love this idea. We have been doing alot of talking about homeschooling when the time comes.

  24. you are SUPER organized, nicole, holy cow!

  25. Wow, that is an awesome space, way to go!!

  26. your classroom looks awesome 🙂

  27. I think this will make things so much easier for you. This should be an exciting project for you and your husband!

  28. WOw that is a lot of space!! I think it is great to home school!!!

  29. Wow I love your current homeschool area! Looks amazing to me! Our homeschool area is the dining room and living room!

  30. What a great idea! The space you’re using now looks great but imagine what you can accomplish when the transformation to the garage is complete! Can’t wait to see the results.

  31. I really like your actual homeschool area too, but can’t wait to see the new room. I wish I could homeschool too. Good luck with the changes!

  32. We did not have a designated homeschool area until my daughter moved out, now her bedroom is the homeschool area and office.

  33. How exciting! I used to have part of my garage for homeschool when we lived in a condo. But it got too cold or too hold so we eventually moved back to the dining room. So make sure your garage will be well ventilated and have great air conditioning before you hole up in there! We didn’t have windows in the garage so it would feel a little claustrophobic at times and we’d all be itching to get out of there. 😉 Just a few things to consider!

  34. I am so impressed by your current home school room. I can’t wait to see the new one!

  35. That wall of cubbies is amazing. I can’t wait to see what’s next!

  36. That will be awesome to have a dedicated homeschool area. I made an office/homeschool/computer room at the beginning of this school year and I love it.

  37. Love your homeschooling area! Good luck on the new area. I homeschooled my daughter where ever it worked for us!

  38. That wall is a DREAM! I would love to do something like that in my basement!

  39. Wow, it sounds like it will be wonderful!

  40. This looks like a great area and a fabulous idea for your family. Good for you! Wow I can’t imagine homeschooling 5 kiddies. I have a 21 month old now and another on the way. I plan on homeschooling my kids, too. 🙂

  41. Our homeschool area is currently in the kitchen until we get the new room ready.

  42. How very exciting! I’m sure you will feel amazing once you’ve cleared through the old to make room for the new… and having a large designated learning space for your children… right now, I can only dream 😉

  43. It sounds like a fun project for the entire family. I would like to see the after photos.

  44. That is a lot of stuff accumulated and I don’t envy you the work. I hate cleaning and packing up things. Being military we have to move every couple of years and it sucks! Sounds like you have a great plan though and I can’t wait to see the end results.

  45. Good for you. Keep us updated on your progress. I wish I had a room dedicated to school when I home schooled my kids.

  46. I bet you are exciting about the room you are going to make. I have 4 kids so I know how stuff can pile up. I have been trying to get rid of stuff we don’t need/use too!

  47. wow! looks like you are pretty organized already. can’t wait to see the result!

    • I feel your frustration. We use a small office to school 3, kindergarten, 2nd grade, & 8th grade with our oldest in college. So we have outgrown our space. Trying to clean out our garage now convert to a school room & its hard. It has been our catch all for 8yrs, every since we moved in this house. Sigh but we will get it done.

  48. Great idea to use part of the garage since you could afford to take over that space! My sister in law revamped their entire garage to make two bedrooms and it was awesome! I love that huge book shelf in your current school room!
