We wrapped up our dinosaur lesson, to end it I decided to do a dinosaur fossil dig with my 2 boys.
Directions how how to make the salt dough (which is what I used to make the fossils):
What you’ll need:
4 cups of all purpose flour
1 cup of salt
1 1/2 cups of water

How to make your salt dough:
Mix the indgredients above in a bowl until a dough forms. Add extra water a little bit at a time as needed if the dough is too dry.
Shape the dough however you’d like or use it for your craft of choice.
Place the dough creations on a cookie sheet and bake for one hour at 350 degrees. Keep in mind the thickness of the items will affect the amount of time you cook them!
When the baked dough has cooled it takes paint quite well.
I made the above receipe then in small clumps. We used small dinosaur toys to press their footprints into the dough, plus we pressed dinosaurs on their sides into the dough. Then we baked them and then painted them.
Then we went to the playground in our complex & I buried their dinosaur fossils in the large sandbox. The boys were paleontologist & dug for their fossils!
They really enjoyed this hands on activity!

That’s a great idea there. I always find that it is much cheaper and a lot more fun to make homemade toys rather than to spend a lot of money at the store. You can be much more creative and really make the toys more fun at home.
I just found your website while searching for ways to make fossils for a creation science presentation at church. Just wondering – I would like to enclose the plastic dinosaur inside a rough ‘egg’ shape and not bake it such a long time so that the dinosaur doesn’t melt. What would you think of baking the ‘egg’ for just 10-15 minutes so that the outside is set and then letting it dry completely, either in the air or a dehydrator. I have 2 1/2 months before I need them.
Grandma Cheryll, what are you planning on using for the materials in the egg. I guess it depends if it safe in the oven or not.
