I have seen Sheila Walsh at Women’s of Faith several times and I have enjoyed her speaking. So when I saw this book to do a book review I immediatley grabbed it. Somehow I think that these great speakers have it all together but after reading this book I realized that they are normal human beings just like me. They have bad days and just because they travel to speak to thousands of women and write books doesn’t mean their lives are perfect. I was wrong to think that. This book touched me because I so could relate. Sheila Walsh has in her past struggled with depression. This book is about her journey with depression and how her trust in God brought her through it. Many times God is testing us or we are in a trail but ultimately who is going to help us through it? Without trusting God we have nothing. That is what this book is all about.
My favorite section of this book is in Chapter 5 (Where Were you?) Sheila Walsh reminds us of the Bible story of Mary and Martha. Their brother Lazarus just died and Jesus arrives at their home 3 days after Lazarus’ is passing. Martha runs out to greet Jesus but she has lost hope and trust because her humanity cries out, “If you had been here, he wouldn’t have died!”. Bust as she looks into Jesus’ eyes, her faith rallies. “I know, “she adds, “that even now God will do anything you ask.” I don’t know about you but I can relate. I have been in that place where part of me wants to cry out “why?” to God but another part believes in and longs for His will. It’s a struggle. We know Jesus is loving and powerful and can do anything, but sometimes He doesn’t do things that we believe to be in his character. So Jesus assures Martha that Lazarus will rise again. Martha tells Jesus, “Yes, Lord I believe.” (John 11:27). Jesus brings Lazarus back from the grave. How many times have you regretted not always trusting God? Me, several times!
This book is packing with Bible verses that about trust. If you struggle with trusting God which at one point or another we all do this book is for you. What most people do not know about me is that I have been where Shelia Walsh was, struggling with depression taking prescription pills for the depression too. Praise God for His faithfulness! I can look back now reading this book and recall all the times I haven’t trusted Christ and regret it. This book has made an impact on my life.
